Ocean Prime Chicago

I know what you're thinking, "another steakhouse in Chicago?!". Well I'm here to tell you that Ocean Prime is the latest Chicago steakhouse but it's so much more than that. Ocean Prime made its debut in April on the corner of Wacker and Michigan. The 16th location of the national chain is huge - we're talking 350 seats, plus plenty of private dining space. It's a beautiful, open space with towering chandeliers and gold accents.

Ocean Prime is a great spot for a corporate lunch or dinner, family gathering, or date night, which is what drew my husband and me. We had the perfect table (table 37 - request it) looking out toward Michigan Ave.

As its name suggests, Ocean Prime specializes in seafood and steaks. We started with seafood, including sushi (there are six options to choose from) and raw oysters. The Tuna Roll with spicy tuna, avocado, and cucumber is not reinventing the wheel, but it was tasty and had a beautiful presentation. The full raw bar offerings include crab, lobster, shrimp, crab legs, and a heaping seafood tower.

Pro Tip: Ocean Prime has a great happy hour, Monday-Friday from 4-6PM in the lounge. That's when all of their appetizers, sushi, and oysters are half off. Plus they offer half off all beers, select wines by the glass, and select cocktails!

We had a great server who made some helpful suggestions of what to order, including the Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli appetizer with Golden Oak mushrooms.  Each piece of pasta was perfectly tender and exploded with buttery, cheesy flavor. This is definitely a must order! There are plenty of traditional salad and soup offerings to kick off your meal as well.

For our main course, my husband opted for the 8 ounce filet mignon. One thing to know about the steaks at Ocean Prime is that they are seasoned and broiled, resulting in an uber tender cut of meat. If you're used to a crispy charred crust on your steak, you may be surprised to find these steaks tend to have a minimal crust.

I ordered the Chilean sea bass which was absolutely delicious. It was perfectly cooked, super flaky and light, and allowed me the stomach space for our decadent side dishes!

Ocean Prime's side dish menu could be the menu for a separate restaurant. There are 14 separate sides, half of which are different preparations of potatoes. You can have them au gratin, mashed with garlic or lobster, loaded, twice baked, fried, or in tater tot form with smoked Gouda, which is what grabbed our attention. They were hearty and came with a flavorful aioli for dipping. We balanced it with the chophouse corn which was buttery and sweet.

We had to save room for dessert with options like Ten Layer Carrot Cake and Warm Butter Cake. If you know anything about us, it's that any peanut butter and chocolate combo on a dessert menu gets us every time. The Chocolate Peanut Butter pie starts with an Oreo crust topped with a thick layer of peanut butter mousse and is enrobed in luscious bittersweet chocolate ganache. It's a huge dessert, worthy of a steakhouse menu, and a must order if you're a peanut butter and chocolate fan.

Ocean Prime keeps up with the Chicago steakhouse competition in terms of ambiance, level of service, and food quality and would surely make for a great experience, whether for business or pleasure. We found ourselves more partial to the seafood offerings, than the steak offerings but appreciated the long list of side dish options, and that indulgent Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie.

Note: my meal at Ocean Prime was complimentary in order to facilitate this post; however, all opinions are my own.
