A Food Tour of Boston!

May 13, 2014

Two weeks ago I went to visit my friend Kacey and her boyfriend Mike in Boston. I had never been to Boston before so I was pretty excited to see a new city. One of my goals during the visit was to get as much fresh seafood as possible and I definitely did. In the short weekend I was there, I managed to have not only the best oysters of my life, but also the very best lobster roll.

Check out some of the places we went to and a special thank you to Kacey and Mike for being such wonderful hosts and showing me the best of Boston!

Carrie Nation

What: Restaurant and cocktail club
Location: Beacon Hill

The club is the main attraction though I didn't get a chance to check it out. Food was OK but better to stop by for a cocktail and something from the raw bar.

Mike's Pastry

What: Bakery famous for its cannoli
Location: North End

We ordered a chocolate mousse cannolo to go but it got left in the fridge so I didn't get to try it! Mike's has a huge variety of flavors including pistachio, amaretto, Oreo, and peanut butter, so you really can't go wrong.

 Neptune Oyster

What: Seafood restaurant and oyster bar
Location: North End

There's a reason people line up early and wait hours to get a table at Neptune Oyster. The tiny restaurant served the best oysters and lobster roll I have ever eaten. Try the hot Maine lobster roll which is served with a massive amount of lobster meat oozing with hot butter. The fries are fantastic as well. It was well worth the two hours we waited for a table! Not to mention the staff is super friendly and accommodating. Much appreciated when you've been waiting awhile!

Harpoon Brewery

What: Brewery and tap room
Location: Seaport District

Harpoon has breweries in Boston and Windsor, VT and offers tours daily for $5. On the day we went, all of the tours were sold out, so it's best to arrive early. We still stopped by the tap room for a flight of beers, including pours only available in the tap room. If you're hungry, there is a selection of soft pretzels to enjoy with your brews.

 Atlantic Fish Company
www.atlanticfishco.com
What: Seafood restaurant
Location: Back Bay

Atlantic Fish Company offers a high-quality selection of fresh seafood and catches of the day. You can select any type of fresh fish, have it prepared one of six ways, and pair it with two sides of your choice. I loved the variety and quality of fish available and the service was fantastic as well.

Crab Cake
Lobster Ravioli
Blackened Sea Bass
Pan-Seared Halibut
 Zaftigs Delicatessen
www.zaftigs.com
What: Jewish deli
Location: Brookline

Located in Brookline, one of the Jewish communities in greater Boston, Zaftigs serves traditional deli fare, and all-day breakfast favorites. It reminded me of my favorite Chicago delis The Bagel, and Max & Benny's and was a nice change of pace from the other restaurants we visited in Boston proper. The nova lox plate was amazing!

  1. Great choices. Looks like you had a great time!! Haven't been "home" in a while but plan to check out a few favorites when there in June: Antico Forno and Limoncellos in the North End... or Sorellina in Back Bay...Il Forno in Westboro for Northern Italian or Cafe Espresso in Worcester for the best Italian this side of Italy...Kelly's on Revere Beach for chowdah, The Clam Box in Ipswich for fried clams, (Ronnie's in Auburn is also great!), Haru in Copley, Oishii in Chestnut Hill, or Minado in Framingham for sushi. Cannoli's? Love love love Mike's in the North End...almost a tradition.... but Holy Cannoli in Worcester gives them a real run for their money!!!
