Cheese, Please!

October 28, 2013

I had the pleasure of attending wine bar Bin 36's 2013 Artisanal Cheese Tasting event! I, like most people I know, enjoy cheese of all types. But, when you pair cheese with wine, it's a whole new ball game. Playing on the restaurant's "36" theme, the event offered the chance to sample more than 36 cheeses from around the world, with wine, for just $36.

When it comes to knowing which cheeses to try on a menu, I usually try to mix it up based on the type of milk used to make the cheese. I can't say I really know what flavors or textures to expect, so this was a great way to sample a variety of options and become more comfortable with cheeses.

Fresh Cheese Table Paired with Pinot Grigio
Blue Cheese Table Paired with Dessert Wine
There were six different tables set up, each with a group of cheeses that were similar. Stationed at each table was a Bin 36 staff member who was very knowledgeable about the cheeses. We also sampled a perfectly paired wine at each table.
Blooming Rinds Table Paired with Prosecco
We had the opportunity to try a range of cheeses including Cambozola, a blend between camembert and gorgonzola, manchego marinated in olive oil, house smoked gouda, and a 10 year aged cheddar that was extremely sharp! I loved being able to try such a wide variety of cheeses that I'd probably never order on my own. The staff was very helpful and gave us as much cheese and wine as we could handle!

Semi-Firm and Hard Cheeses
In between cheese tastings, we were able to snack on some tasty bites including smoked meats, homemade hummus, olives, crackers and figs. It was the perfect laid back Sunday afternoon event.

If you're in the mood to sample some wine and cheese (who's not?!) head over to Bin 36 in River North to try one of their various wine and cheese flights, or their full menu of small plates and entrees!
