Hubba Hubba!

June 22, 2010

My dad's birthday conveniently fell on Father's Day this year, so when he picked Hub 51 for his birthday dinner, I was thrilled and knew I'd have to write a post about it! I was also especially excited to try it knowing that the cast of Glee dined there last month while in town for their concert.

I started with the Hub Punch Part Deux, a sweet mix of Bacardi Dragonberry, lemonade, and other "secret" ingredients. This drink was featured in Metromix recently and was a nice refreshing option on such a humid night.

Next, our family split two appetizers, the first was a spicy shrimp and king crab roll with masago and chili oil. This was fresh and delicious and we enjoyed the huge lumps of crab on top of each piece.

The second appetizer was the Sunday Night Chicken Egg Rolls, which are only available on Sundays since they are brought in from another Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, Big Bowl. These giant peanut and chicken-filled rolls came with a sweet and sour sauce and an insanely spicy mustard sauce!

Our entrees came next and my sister and I opted for the tacos. I chose the fish tacos which are their most popular, while she tried the special short rib tacos.

Hub 51's tacos come deconstructed with their hand-pressed corn tortillas, guacamole, salsa, pico de gallo, and rice and beans. I thought this made for a nice presentation but was admittedly difficult to eat. The fish was supposed to be spicy but wasn't. Luckily, there were enough options on my plate to add to the fish's lack of flavor.

The birthday boy ordered the 10 oz. filet with giant onion rings on top, while my mom had the fresh fish.

The waitress informed us that the cuts of meat they use at Hub 51 come from the same ranch as the steaks that are served at Wildfire. I really enjoyed the way that Hub 51 brought together the best elements of some of the Lettuce Entertain You restaurants.

Last but not least was dessert. My dad was pleasantly surprised when our waitress brought out a gigantic piece of fudgey chocolate cake. Upon biting into it, my dad quickly discovered that this was no ordinary piece of chocolate cake. It was THE cake that he deemed his favorite from the kitchens at Maggiano's. It was just another Lettuce Entertain You dish that literally made for a sweet surprise!

Overall, Hub 51 was a great dining experience with delicious food, minimalist ambience and exceptional service. I definitely would go back for drinks and appetizers on their patio...4 big stars!
