There's No Place Like Home Bistro

August 22, 2014

My favorite neighborhood restaurant spot has to be HB Home Bistro. Yes, it's only a few blocks from me so it's super convenient, but it's also consistently on point. One of the best nights to stop by is on Wednesdays when HB offers a $33 prix fixe night. You can order any starter, second course or dessert, and entree off the menu. As an added bonus, HB is BYOB with no corkage fee (say that 10 times fast). Talk about a win-win.

I headed over on a Wednesday with the BF and his mom and we grabbed a nice window table. Among the three of us, we ordered quite a variety of dishes. That's why I especially love the prix fixe menu--you're not limited in your options and the menu is constantly changing.

To start, the BF's mamacita ordered the beer battered asparagus with a malt vinegar aioli. The tempura batter was light and not greasy.

The BF's first course choice was a no brainer, the housemade soft pretzel with smoked sea salt, and maple-picked mustard seeds. We had these when we dined at HB for New Year's Eve but these tasted a little different. I really enjoyed the pickled mustard (thanks for sharing BF!).

For my first course, I ordered the almond stuffed dates wrapped in bacon and baked with brown sugar. These were amaaaaaaazing. Marcona almonds provided the perfect amount of crunch and the classic bacon and sugar combo is always fantastic.

Next up, the BFs mama ordered the baby beet salad with candied gold beet, roasted red beet, honey ricotta, hazelnut streusel, orange, and fennel. WOAH. Go back and read that again. Can you handle all of that?! Needless to say, it was a hit.

The BF flashed a wildcard and ordered the frisee salad with pickled apricot, kalamata olive, feta, radish, and brioche croutons. This was also full of flavor and freshness and the BF generously shared those amazing pickled apricots.

You're probably wondering what I ordered for my second course. I decided to get dessert instead. Cause, you know...dessert.

Moving on to main courses, the BF ordered one of HB's nightly specials, handmade burrata gnocchi with tomatoes, spinach, and house cured bacon. In his own words, "ugh, it was so good."

The BFs madre and I both ordered the same main course, pan-roasted salmon with couscous, cucumber raita, basil, strawberry, and black pepper. Talk about a summer dish. There was so much flavor and texture on our plates. It was perfect.

Lastly, we all split the apple cinnamon bread pudding (I'm really good at sharing). I always make room for dessert and this was no exception. It was a warm and sweet ending to a wonderful meal.

From start to finish, our prix fixe meal at HB was superb. I especially enjoy how you're always bound to try a different menu every time you visit HB, but regardless of what you have, it's always excellent. I'm giving HB 4.5 ghosts for their creative menu and high value prix fixe menu. The only thing off on the night we dined was the service.
